    Definition 1.Group IV consists of two subgroups: group IVb, main group, and group IVa. Group IVa consists of titanium, zirconium, and hafnium which are generally classified as transition metals. The main group consists of carbonium, silicium, germanium, tin, and lead. The main valency of the elements is IV, and the members of the group show a variation from nonmetallic to metallic behaviour in moving down the group. The reactivity of the elements increases down the group from carbon to lead. All react with oxygen on heating. Reference 1.CHSK;

    Definition "groupe constitué de 15 éléments métalliques connus comme la série des lanthanides (numéros atomiques 57 à 71), auxquels viennent s'ajouter l'yttrium, de numéro atomique 39, et le scandium, de numéro atomique 21, partageant tous des propriétés chimiques similaires" Reference "COM-FR, d'après:- Futura Sciences > Définitions > Terre rare (27.5.2020)- Encyclo-ecolo.com > Terres rares (27.5.2020)"
    Comment Contrairement à ce que laisse entendre leur dénomination, les terres rares sont relativement abondantes dans la croûte terrestre, plus en tout cas que l'or ou l'argent. On retrouve ces métaux sous forme de traces dans la plupart des environnements naturels.Leurs propriétés électroniques, magnétiques, optiques ou encore catalytiques, en font des éléments particulièrement recherchés par l'industrie (aéronautique, automobile, technologies de l'information, etc.). C'est de ce point de vue que le terme « terres rares » trouve sa cohérence puisque les quantités disponibles restent considérées comme faibles compte tenu de leur poids économique. On les qualifie d'ailleurs également de « métaux stratégiques ».
