Nóta Historically there has been some debate about the taxonomic classification of this species. In 2009, the genus Manta, previously considered monotypic, was re-evaluated and split into two species: the Reef Manta Ray (Manta alfredi) and Giant Manta Ray (Manta birostris IATE:785682 ) (Marshall et al. 2009), a change supported also by genetic evidence (Kashiwagi et al. 2008a, Ito and Kashiwagi 2010). Subsequently, the species was reattributed to the genus Mobula. Manta and Mobula are similar in appearance, hence making it easy for observers to confuse the two. The current (2021) scientific consensus, reflected in FishBase and the IUCN Red List, is that the species belongs to the genus Mobula.
