    en
Definition in situ enhanced mobilisation of contaminants in contaminated soil for recovery and treatment by forcing a fluid through the contaminated soil to either displace the contaminants or induce physical, chemical, biological and/or thermal conditions that favour removal Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: C.D. Shackelford. 'Geoenvironmental Engineering' (19.7.2023). In: Reference Module in Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences. Elsevier, 2013, ISBN 9780124095489"
Comment Although the terms soil flushing and soil washing often are used interchangeably to describe the same technology, the term soil flushing generally is used in connection with in situ remediation, whereas the term soil washing is reserved for ex situ remediation.Flushing fluids may be water, enhanced water, and gaseous mixtures. Typical soil flushing solutions include water, dilute acids and bases, complexing and chelating agents, reducing agents, solvents, and surfactants. The fluids are introduced through spraying, surface flooding, subsurface leach fields, and subsurface injection. In some cases, steam has been used as the fluid in soil flushing applications.

Definition the conservation of ecosystems and natural habitats and the maintenance and recovery of viable populations of species in their natural surroundings and, in the case of domesticated or cultivated species, in the surroundings where they have developed their distinctive properties Reference "Convention on Biological Diversity, Art. 2 Use of Terms, http://www.cbd.int/convention/articles/default.shtml?a=cbd-02 [19.3.2013]"
Comment "Not to be confused with ex situ conservation [ IATE:1443500 ] which refers to the conservation of species in suitable locations outside the natural habitat. It is the process of protecting an endangered plant or animal species in its natural habitat, either by protecting or cleaning up the habitat itself, or by defending the species from predators. It is applied to conservation of agricultural biodiversity in agroecosystems by farmers, especially those using unconventional farming practices.
