- Comment BPR aims to help organisations fundamentally rethink how they do their work in order to dramatically improve customer service, cut operational costs, and become world-class competitors. BPR seeks to help companies radically restructure their organisations by focusing on the ground-up design of their business processes. According to early BPR proponent Thomas Davenport (1990), a business process is a set of logically related tasks performed to achieve a defined business outcome. Re-engineering emphasised a holistic focus on business objectives and how processes related to them, encouraging full-scale recreation of processes rather than iterative optimisation of sub-processes.

- Comment Michael Hammer et James Champy, deux des quatre pères de ce concept avec Thomas H. Davenport et James E. Short, ont décrit cette nouvelle approche dans un ouvrage paru en français sous le titre «Le reengineering : réinventer l'entreprise pour une amélioration spectaculaire de ses performances» (Paris, Dunod, 1993). Il s'agit d'inventer un nouveau modèle d'entreprise qui réponde aux conditions de compétitivité modifiées. L'idée de rupture avec les anciens modes de pensée et d'organisation économique se trouve au coeur de ce concept.
