- Comment In the french system, "période légale de conception" is defined as: "Statutory period which determines the date on which a child was conceived". [Definition translated from FR language] "Legislation presumes that a child was conceived during the period that extends from the three-hundredth to the one-hundred and eightieth day, inclusive, before the date of birth. Conception is presumed to have taken place at any time during that period, depending of what the welfare of the child requires. [16.03.2011]) . While a similar concept exists in the UK system , its content is not statutorily defined. In English case-law, periods between coitus and birth which have been held possible periods of gestation have varied from 174 days to 349 days (Halsbury's Laws of England 5(3) 94). Like other presumptions in relation to paternity, the concept is becoming obsolete. It is now possible for a child to be conceived after the death of a husband using assisted conception techniques.
