Sainmhíniú green business model or broad set of land management and livestock practices1 which aims to remove CO2 from the atmosphere2 and to store carbon in natural carbon pools (living biomass, dead organic matter and soils, plants, etc.)3 through carbon sequestration, with a view to minimising greenhouse gas emissions2 while achieving other goals, such as improving soil fertility and biodiversity4 Tagairt Council-PT, based on 1 Communication from the Commission to the European Parliament and the Council2 Cropaia, What is carbon farming?3 Ecomatters, How the EU is accelerating carbon farming & industrial carbon removals 4 Interreg North Sea Region, Five promising measures to protect the climate by Carbon Farming
Nóta At EU policy level, carbon farming was introduced by the Farm to Fork Strategy as a new concept and business model that rewards the actors of the land sector (e.g. farmers and foresters) for taking up improved land management practices that increase carbon sequestration.5 Practices involved in carbon farming include no-till or conservation tillage farming; cover crops; mulching; crop rotation; integrated nutrient management; integrated pest management; precision irrigation techniques; avoiding surface flood irrigation; restoration of degraded soils.2 Carbon farming and regenerative agriculture are often used as synonyms. Carbon farming practices largely overlap with regenerative agriculture. They are also a subset of the larger set of principles and practices that encompass regenerative agriculture.6
