- Nóta The syndrome is seen almost exclusively within the first 3 days after the sow gives birth.The primary clinical signs of the syndrome are retarded growth and increased mortality of the sow's piglets, due to insufficient colostrum/milk.Numerous causes and manifestations can be involved in this syndrome.The numerous causes and manifestations that can be involved in this syndrome are reflected in the use of several different names, e.g. mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA) complex, agalactia syndrome, dysgalactia syndrome, mammary oedema, periparturient hypogalactia syndrome, agalactia toxaemia, and puerperal mastitis. However, these names are not synonymous and are often misused.
