    Comment A fingerprint recognition system can be used for both verification and identification. In verification, the system compares an input fingerprint to the 'enrolled' fingerprint of a specific user to determine if they are from the same finger (1:1 match). In identification, the system compares an input fingerprint with the prints of all enrolled users in the database to determine if the person is already known under a duplicate or false identity (1:N match).---Not to be confused with automatic fingerprint identification system (narrower). The distinction between these two concepts is not always clearly made and the the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

    Comment Le système peut avoir deux objectifs:- l'authentification (ou la vérification): le système valide l'identité d'une personne en comparant les données biométriques capturées à celles qui figurent dans sa propre base de données (correspondance parfaite ou nulle). - l'identification: le système identifie un individu en effectuant des comparaisons avec les empreintes digitales contenues dans une ou plusieurs bases de données (et peut donc échouer si le sujet ne figure pas dans la (les) bases de données utilisées).À ne pas confondre avec système automatisé d'identification des empreintes digitales qui est une notion plus restreinte. La distinction entre ces deux notions n'est pas toujours faite et les deux termes sont parfois utilisés l'un pour l'autre.
