Definition criminal offence which affects the peace or safety of more than one state or which is so reprehensible in nature as to justify the intervention of international agencies in the investigation and prosecution thereof Reference Council-EN, based on: Duhaime.org - The Law Reference Site > Dictionary http://www.duhaime.org/LegalDictionary/I/InternationalCrime.aspx [19.7.2017]
Comment Traditional examples of such offences include war crimes [ IATE:159771 ], crimes against humanity [ IATE:885244 ], piracy [ IATE:1085369 ] and crimes against peace [ IATE:885242 ], whilst more recent examples are genocide [ IATE:142015 ] and terrorism [ IATE:1469176 ]. The term 'international crime' is sometimes used, rather loosely, to denote 'transnational crimes' [ IATE:882719 ], however the latter term has distinct connotations.1 1 Council-EN.
