    Comment Du rivage vers le large, on trouve: - le plateau continental, plateforme qui s’étend au-delà du rivage et dont la profondeur passe insensiblement de 30-40 m à 250 m environ. Selon les côtes, il peut mesurer de quelques centaines de mètres à plusieurs centaines de km de large; - le talus continental, limite externe du plateau continental marquée par une pente très importante et dont la profondeur descend très rapidement de 250 m à 2 500-3 000 m; - le bassin océanique, formé essentiellement d’une immense plaine abyssale dont la profondeur augmente de façon presque insensible du bas de la pente vers le large, de 3 000 m environ jusqu’à 6 000 m. Cette plaine est perturbée par la présence de la dorsale, une gigantesque chaîne de montagnes qui parcourt en serpentant le fond de tous les océans, de véritables montagnes individuelles, ainsi que de fosses océaniques, lieu où sont atteintes les plus grandes profondeurs (jusqu’à 11 00 m).
