iodine thyroid blocking tablet | ITB tablet
    en
Definition "medicinal product consisting of tablets of potassium iodide (KI) or potassium iodate (KIO3)" Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: WHO. 'Iodine thyroid blocking Guidelines for use in planning for and responding to radiological and nuclear emergencies' (6.12.2023). © World Health Organization 2017"
Comment It is administered as an urgent protective action in order to protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine as (stable) iodine will accumulate mainly in the thyroid gland. It will saturate the thyroid gland and stop radioactive iodine (iodine-131 or other radioactive iodine isotopes) accumulating in it.The medication also exists in liquid form but (double scored) tablets are preferred as they have the advantage of easy storage and distribution, including pre-distribution.However, stable iodine is likely to cause less gastrointestinal irritation if administered in tablet form. Tablets can be crushed and mixed with fruit juice, jam, milk or similar substance.
