    open-loop recycling | open-loop system | open loop system
    en
Definition recycling system in which a material is not recycled indefinitely and is eventually excluded from the utilisation loop and becomes waste Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: Penn State. '5.2. Recycling: open-loop versus closed-loop thinking' (23.5.2023)"
Comment Recycling loop results in producing another material, which is typically of lower grade and purity than the original material. It may be transformed further into a different product, which after use creates similar outputs. In the long run, a small part of the original resource may be stuck in the loop, but the majority of it becomes disposed of.

    en
Definition system for cleaning exhaust gases from ships, which uses seawater to neutralise sulphur oxide emissions and subsequently treats wastewater and discharges it into the sea Reference "Council-EN, based on IDC Consorzio > All you need to know about Exhaust Gas Scrubbers, https://www.idcconsorzio.com/all-you-need-know-about-scrubbers/ [11.1.2019]"
Comment This method can be used in most seas around the world, where alkalinity levels are high. Exhaust gas enters the scrubber and is sprayed with seawater, the SOx in the exhaust reacts with water and forms sulphuric acid. Chemicals are not required since the natural alkalinity of seawater neutralises the acid. Wash water from the scrubber is treated and monitored to ensure that it conforms to MEPC 184(59) criteria and can be discharged into the sea with no risk of harm to the environment.
