In cultured shrimp, infection can result in mass mortality occurring, usually in early to late juvenile stages. Moribund shrimp may exhibit a bleached overall appearance and a yellowish discoloration of the cephalothorax caused by the underlying yellow hepatopancreas, which may be exceptionally soft when compared with the brown hepatopancreas of a healthy shrimp. In many cases, the total loss of a pond crop occurs within a few days of the first appearance of shrimp showing gross signs of YHD1 (Chantanachookin et al., 1993).
