Definition "clinical study in which the participants are assigned randomly to separate groups for the purpose of comparing different treatments" Reference "COM-Terminology Coodination, based on: - National Cancer Institute (U.S. National Institutes of Health) > Research Partners in Cancer Research > Clinical Trials Information > How Do Clinical Trials Work? (15.1.2024) - Cancer Research UK > About Cancer > Find a clinical trial > What clinical trials are > Randomised trials (15.1.2024)"
Comment "Randomisation helps prevent bias (i.e. when a trial's results are affected by human choices or other factors not related to the treatment being tested). The selection is usually done by computer. Certain details (such as age, gender or the stage of illness) are put into the computer first to guarantee that the different groups in a trial are as similar as possible and that the treatments they receive can be compared objectively. Neither the researchers nor the participants can choose their group.Normally the term describes studies that compare multiple treatment groups with each other (and which don't have a control group), although it is often used synonymously with randomised controlled trial."
