    Comment Guidance for candidates and agents To qualify as a candidate for a UK Parliamentary election a person must satisfy the following criteria on the day they are nominated and on polling day. They must: have attained the age of at least 18 years and either be a British citizen, or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or be a citizen of a Commonwealth country and either not require leave to enter or remain in the UK or have indefinite leave to remain in the UK. Citizens of other countries (including other European Union member states) are not eligible to become a Member of the UK Parliament. To qualify as a candidate for election to to a local authority or to the European Parliament, a person must satisfy the following criteria on the day they are nominated and on polling day. They must: - have attained the age of at least 18 years and - be a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of any other member state of the European Union.
