Definition virus subtype of influenza, clinically identified in April 2009, affecting humans, which contains genes from pig, bird and human influenza viruses, in a combination that had never been observed before anywhere in the world Reference COM-EN, based on:- European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control > Outbreak of novel influenza virus A(H1N1) > Frequently asked questions on novel influenza virus A(H1N1), Updated 29 April 2009, http://ecdc.europa.eu/en/files/pdf/Health_topics/090429_FAQ_swine_influenza.pdf (30.4.2009)- Wikipedia > 2009 swine flu outbreak, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_swine_flu_outbreak (7.5.2009)
Comment In addition there is every indication that this virus has been transmitting from human to human and the resulting illnesses have been severe in a substantial number of cases in Mexico. The new strain is an apparent reassortment of four strains of influenza A virus subtype H1N1. Analysis by the CDC identified the four component strains as one endemic in humans, one endemic in birds, and two endemic in pigs (swine). However, other scientists have stated that analysis of the 2009 swine flu (A/H1N1) viral genome suggests that all RNA segments are of swine origin, and "this preliminary analysis suggests at least two swine ancestors to the current H1N1, one of them related to the triple reassortant viruses isolated in North America in 1998." One swine strain was widespread in the United States, the other in Eurasia.ECDC prefers to use the term influenza A(H1N1)v (where v indicates variant), which has been chosen by WHO’s Global Influenza Surveillance Network and helps distinguish the virus from seasonal influenza A(H1N1) viruses and A(H1N1) swine influenza viruses. A name for the disease caused by the virus has yet to be determined by WHO but the term ‘swine flu’ is inaccurate for what is now a human influenza.REF: European Centre for Infectious Disease Control ECDC Interim Risk Assessment > Health Topics > Documents > Human cases of influenza A(H1N1)v, http://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/healthtopics/Documents/0906_Influenza_AH1N1_Risk_Assessment.pdf (27.8.2009)
