judgment
en
Sainmhíniú The intellectual process of reaching a conclusion on a dispute, and also an actual decision of a court determining the rights of parties in an action brought before it. In the Anglo-American system, which relies heavily on law developed by the courts, while the judgment is the operative part of the court's decision, as much or greater interest attaches to the opinion or opinions given by the judge or judges to explain the reasons for their decision because these opinions, insofar as they disclose the principle on which the decision was founded, have influence in determining the law applicable to similar cases in the future. In some cases, courts may be asked to give not only judgments decisive of disputes, but also advisory judgments on the application or legal effect of some rule of law in certain circumstances. Tagairt The Oxford Companion to Law.
