- Sainmhíniú main part of the Baltic sea extending from the coast of Germany and Poland in the south to the Ahvenanmaa (Åland) archipelago in the north Tagairt "Council-EN and COM-EN, based on:- International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in subdivisions 22–31 (Baltic Sea, excluding the Gulf of Finland) (7.3.2023), 15 September 2021.- Irma Kallio-Nyberg and Marja-Liisa Koljonen, 'Sea migration patterns in the Atlantic salmon: a comparative study of two stocks and their hybrids' (7.3.2023), Boreal Environment Research 4, Helsinki, 18 June 1999, 163–174."
- Nóta Fairly systematically, the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland are not included as part of the 'Baltic main basin'. While not said explicitly, some sources appear to also exclude the Archipelago Sea and Åland Sea1. The Gulf of Riga is also sometimes excluded2.On occasion, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) groups together the Baltic main basin and the Gulf of Bothnia, which taken as a whole encompass ICES subdivisions 22–313. See Figure 1 of Kallio-Nyberg and Koljonen (1999) below for a labelled map of the Baltic, which refers to a southern and northern main basin4.
