- Nóta Since 2015, every farmer in the European Union who claims a direct payment and has more than 15 hectares of arable land is obliged to have 5% of his arable land covered by ecological focus areas. [..]. Some exceptions to this general rule apply, for example to farmers who have more than 75% of their area under grassland.The obligation to have 5% of land covered by ecological focus areas may be increased to 7 % subject to a European Commission report in 2017 and a legislative proposal from the Commission. This obligation is one of three ʽgreeningʼ measures of the Common Agricultural Policy 2014-2020 - the others being the maintenance of permanent grassland and crop diversification.
