- Comment Traditionally, “freight” refers to goods transported over land via truck or train, whereas “cargo” refers to goods transported by air or sea. This distinction is becoming increasingly blurred, however, and the terms are frequently used interchangeably. It is important to note that the term freight refers to commercial goods only, so mail is referred to as cargo and not freight, regardless of the transport mode.
