La zone de la Convention englobe une grande partie de l’océan Atlantique et inclut les zones économiques exclusives de 200 milles marins des États côtiers (le Canada; le Danemark, pour le Groenland; la France, pour Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon; et les États Unis). Sa superficie est de 6 551 289 km2. Cependant, les mesures de gestion de l’OPANO sont limitées aux zones visées par la Convention de l’OPANO qui ne sont pas de compétence nationale (au-delà des 200 milles des côtes).
