Comment Symptoms include discolouration of buds and vascular tissues, leaf spots, wilting, stem and twig cankers with characteristic red exudate, fruit collapse, and eventually death of the plant. The disease is favoured by cool temperatures and high humidity, thus symptoms are usually seen in spring and autumn. The disease was originally described in Japan in 1989, but its area of origin is uncertain.

Definition dark, necrotic-looking spots on the leaves of plants due to a disease caused by bacteria belonging to the Xanthomonas and Pseudomonas families Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: Bonnie L. Grant, 'Bacterial Leaf Spot On Plants: How To Treat Bacterial Leaf Spot' (4.12.2019), Gardening Know How"
Comment The spots can be brown with yellow halos or just light and dark areas on the foliage. They are irregular and measure between 3/16 and ½ inches wide. They can occur on the top or bottom of a leaf and kill sections of the tissue when they cluster together. They may also appear on the edges of a leaf, where it appears brownish yellow and the tissue dries and breaks off. As they are produced by two different families of pathogens, the Xanthomonas and Pseudomonas families of bacteria, the spots are also slightly different. The Xanthomonas bacteria produce small brown angular and/or circular spots bordered by a yellow tint. On the other hand, the Pseudomonas bacteria cause red-brown angular and/or circular spots that can distort the affected leaf.

    bacterial soft rot
    en
Definition disease caused by bacteria and which damages succulent plant parts such as fruits, tubers, stems and bulbs of plants in nearly every plant family Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: Tobias Lunt. 'Bacterial Soft Rot' (5.12.2019). UW-Madison Plant Pathology. University of Winsconsin-Madison"
Comment Soft rots are caused by several bacteria, most commonly Pectobacterium carotovorum (previously called Erwinia carotovora), Dickeya dadantii (previously called Erwinia chrysanthemi), and certain species of Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Clostridium. These bacteria can enter plants through wounds caused by tools, insects, severe weather such as hail, or through natural openings. The bacteria can be spread from plant to plant by insects, on contaminated tools, or by movement of infested plant debris, soil, or contaminated water. Bacterial soft rots tend to be more of a problem during wet weather and can be more severe when plants lack sufficient calcium.
