Definition virtually pure elemental carbon in the form of colloidal particles that are produced by incomplete combustion or thermal decomposition of gaseous or liquid hydrocarbons under controlled conditions Reference "Reference: International Carbon Black Association > What is Carbon Black?, http://www.carbon-black.org/index.php/what-is-carbon-black [6.10.2016]"
Comment C.A.S. NO. 1333-86-4 Its physical appearance is that of a black, finely divided pellet or powder. Its use in tyres, rubber and plastic products, printing inks and coatings is related to properties of specific surface area, particle size and structure, conductivity and colour. Carbon black is also in the top 50 industrial chemicals manufactured worldwide, based on annual tonnage. Current worldwide production is about 8.1 million tonnes per year. Approximately 90% of carbon black is used in rubber applications, 9% as a pigment, and the remaining 1% as an essential ingredient in hundreds of diverse applications. Carbon black is not soot or black carbon, which are the two most common, generic terms applied to various unwanted carbonaceous by-products resulting from the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing materials, such as oil, fuel oils or gasoline, coal, paper, rubber, plastics and waste material. Soot and black carbon also contain large quantities of dichloromethane- and toluene extractable materials, and can exhibit an ash content of 50% or more.

Definition "charcoal produced from biomass via pyrolysis in an oxygen-limited environment" Reference "COM-Terminology Coordination, based on:International Biochar Initiative. 'FAQ: What is biochar' (10.5.2022)"
Comment Biochar can be used for a range of applications as an agent for soil improvement, improved resource use efficiency, remediation and/or protection against particular environmental pollution and as an avenue for greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation. In addition, to be recognized as biochar, the material has to pass a number of material property definitions that relate both to its value (e.g., H/Corg ratios relate to the degree of charring and therefore mineralization in soil) and its safety (e.g., heavy metal content). Not to be confused with hydrochar, which is the solid product of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) or liquefaction. It is distinct from biochar due to its production process and properties, and typically has higher H/C ratios and lower aromaticity than biochar as well as little or no fused aromatic ring structures.

    equivalent black carbon
    en
Comment Black carbon as such is difficult to measure. The measuring instruments measure “black carbon” through absorption. Using a conversion constant referring to a coefficient “equivalent black carbon” is derived from this data. Therefore, the word “equivalent” is used as it’s not a measured value but a coefficient.
