- Nóta 1) Cell fusion is an important cellular process in which several uninuclear cells (cells with a single nucleus) combine to form a multinuclear cell, known as a syncytium. Cell fusion occurs during differentiation of muscle, bone and trophoblast cells, during embryogenesis, and during morphogenesis. Cell fusion is a necessary event in the maturation of cells so that they maintain their specific functions throughout growth.2) Cell-cell fusion between infected cells and neighboring non-infected cells can also be mediated by certain viruses, and, more especially, enveloped viruses belonging to different viral families and including human pathogens3) Cell fusion is also a technique that can be used to determine the control of characteristics exerted by specific chromosomes by combining two cells from different tissues or species in a cell culture. The cells are fused and coalesce but their nuclei generally remain separate. This technique is also called somatic cell hybridization
