- Nóta „Das Breitmaulnashorn (Ceratotherium simum) gehört zur Ordnung der Unpaarhufer und zur Familie der Nashörner. Die Familie der Nashörner umfasst heute nur noch vier Gattungen mit insgesamt fünf Arten: Breitmaulnashorn, Spitzmaulnashorn, Java-Nashorn, Panzernashorn und Sumatra-Nashorn. Dabei ist das Breitmaulnashorn am nächsten mit dem Spitzmaulnashorn verwandt. Im Laufe der Evolution hatte die Familie der Nashörner zahlreiche weitere Arten hervorgebracht, die aber alle bereits ausgestorben sind, darunter das Waldnashorn, das Wollnashorn und das Steppennashorn, welche bis zur letzten Kaltzeit überlebten. Bei Breitmaulnashörnern werden zwei Unterarten unterschieden: das Nördliche Breitmaulnashorn (C. s. cottoni) und das Südliche Breitmaulnashorn (C. s. simum).“
