Sainmhíniú The House of Lords is traditionally known as the upper house or second chamber of the UK Parliament. It consists of the Lords Spiritual and the Lords Temporal. The Lords Spiritual are the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and the Bishops of London, Durham and Winchester, as well as 21 senior bishops. The Lords Temporal consist of hereditary peers (members of the nobility who have inherited their titles) and life peers (whose titles have been granted only for their lifetime). The Government has begun a step-by-step reform of the House of Lords aimed at making it more representative of British society at the start of the 21st century. As a first step, the number of hereditary peers with the right to sit in the House of Lords has been reduced from over 750 to 92.
