Alternate swelling and shrinking of expanding clays results in deep cracks in the dry season.The name Vertisol (from Latin vertere, to turn) refers to the constant internal turnover (churning) of soil material. Found in depressions and level to undulating areas, mainly in tropical and subtropical, semi-arid to subhumid and humid climates with an alternation of distinct wet and dry seasons. The climax vegetation is savannah, natural grassland and/or woodland.
