However, studies have found that using additives to accelerate their degradation does not necessarily improve their environmental impact, and there is uncertainty about the impact of these plastics on the natural environment when they break down into smaller pieces. There are concerns that these plastics are unsuitable for conventional recycling methods, due to the chemical additives, or for composting, due to the plastic not breaking down fast enough. The term is therefore not necessarily synonymous with 'compostable'.

- Nóta "Biodégradable" est un qualificatif qui sert à démarquer certains sacs des sacs conventionnels en plastique qui sont trop peu recyclables. Le qualificatif est revendiqué pour deux nouveaux types de sacs dont la vitesse de biodégradation est très différente: les sacs compostables IATE:3571637 et les sacs oxodégradables IATE:3571634 .
