Comment It has the double function of bringing the pH of the soil to around the optimal value of 6-7 while providing calcium and magnesium. Due to the plant materials residues or for environmental reasons the soils tend to become more acidic over time. Liming materials 'neutralise' the soils. They are by nature calcium or magnesium hydroxidic compounds, and on top of lowering the acidity they also provide calcium and magnesium, two important secondary nutrients (primary nutrients being nitrogen, phosphorus, potash). The typical natural liming material is called limestone. Reference: European Commission. DG GROW

    en
Definition "limestone deposited during the Sarmatian Stage in a region having a connection at that time to the north of the Black Sea, anciently known as Sarmatia" Reference COM-EN
Comment 'Sarmatic'/'Sarmatian', when used as a geological descriptor, specifies a time period (the Sarmatian Stage) and a connection to the region of Sarmatia north of the Black Sea, anciently known as Sarmatia. Some limestone deposits in Austria are described as Sarmatic because they were laid down during the Sarmatian Stage, when the Paratethys Sea existed, stretching from north of the Alps over Central Europe to the Aral Sea in Central Asia, thus having a connection to the area subsequently referred to as Sarmatia. Sarmatic deposits are often defined by the mollusc fauna they contain.
