- Nóta "The standard ‘essential elements’ clause states as follows:'Respect for democratic principles and fundamental human rights, as laid down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and for the principle of the rule of law, underpins the internal and international policies of both Parties and constitutes an essential element of this Agreement'. Since 1995 the clause is included in all EU external agreements.
