- Nóta European standard EN 16640 specifies the method for the determination of bio-based carbon content in bio-based products using the 14C method. The analytical test methods specified in this European standard are compatible with those described in ASTM D 6866-12. However, it should be noted that following the ASTM D 6866-12 standard, the bio-based carbon content is expressed as a fraction of the organic carbon, thereby excluding any inorganic (fossil) carbon present in the product. According to EN 16640, however, the bio-based carbon content is expressed by a fraction of sample mass or as a fraction of the total carbon content.
