- Sainmhíniú "enabling technology [ IATE:1756394 ] which is expected to play a key role in the shift to a low-carbon, knowledge-based economy, deemed to be a precondition for ensuring welfare, prosperity and security" Tagairt "COM-EN, based on:Preparing for our future: Developing a common strategy for key enabling technologies in the EU. Commission communication COM(2009) 512 final, 20.9.2009, http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=COM:2009:0512:FIN:EN:PDF"
- Nóta KETs are knowledge intensive and associated with high R&D intensity, rapid innovation cycles, high capital expenditure and highly skilled employment. They enable process, goods and service innovation throughout the economy and are of systemic relevance. They are multidisciplinary, cutting across many technology areas with a trend towards convergence and integration. KETs can assist technology leaders in other fields to capitalise on their research efforts. There are differences between EU Member States on what should be regarded as KETs, which might be explained by the strengths and limits of their research and industrial landscapes. Based on current (2009) global research and market trends, the Commission believes that the following could be regarded as the most strategically relevant KETs, given their economic potential, contribution to solving societal challenges and knowledge intensity: nanotechnology; micro- and nano-electronics, including semiconductors; photonics; advanced materials; and biotechnology
