- Nóta Since bacteria are cultured on defined carbon sources, dilution plating detects for a subpopulation of the whole community. Therefore, using different media (carbon/nitrogen sources) will likely give differing results. Despite this limitation, dilution plating can provide a good initial estimation of the number of bacteria in a given community.
