Gaois

The Network of National Experts

Gaois, Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge has been providing terminology services to the translation units in the European Union institutions since Irish became an official language in 2007. That work is funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media and is carried out in conjunction with the Terminology Committee in Foras na Gaeilge. In 2020 Gaois, with support from the Department, established a network of national experts in order to advise Irish-language EU translators. Translators are often required to deal with technical concepts and may benefit from the ability to consult a subject expert and receive a reply in their own language - that is the purpose of this project.

Gaois has recruited a panel of Irish speakers who have specialized knowledge in technical domains such as chemistry, ICT, finance, and law. These experts have access to a private web forum where translators and terminologists from the EU institutions can seek their advice. We are constantly trying to add to the Network and welcome expressions of interest from new members at lionra@gaois.ie.
