The national census (dating from 2007) does not list them as a separate group.The language Qimant is considered endangered. Approximately 1,600 people still speak it and most children are brought up to speak Amharic. Adherence to the traditional religion has dropped substantially, as most of the population has converted to Christianity. Converts often consider themselves to have become Amhara.
