    Comment Sexual violence has been used during armed conflict for many different reasons, including as a form of torture, to inflict injury, to extract information, to degrade and intimidate, and to destroy communities. Rape of women has been used to humiliate opponents, to drive communities and groups off land and to wilfully spread HIV. Women have been forced to perform sexual and domestic slave labour. Women have also been abducted and then forced to serve as ‘wives’ to reward fighters.

    Comment L’emploi de la violence sexuelle lors des conflits armés répond à de multiples fins. Elle constitue notamment une forme de torture, ainsi qu’un moyen d’infliger des dommages, d’extorquer des informations, d’humilier et d’intimider, et de détruire les communautés. Le viol des femmes vise à humilier l’adversaire, à chasser de leurs terres des populations et catégories de population, et à propager délibérément le VIH. Des femmes sont réduites en esclavage sexuel et domestique. Elles peuvent également être enlevées et contraintes de servird’«épouses» aux combattants en leur tenant lieu de récompenses.
