    Nóta The Slovak koruna joined the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II) on 28 November 2005. On 8 July 2008 the European Council gave its green light to the adoption of the euro by Slovakia on 1 January 2009. The euro banknotes and coins were introduced in Cyprus on 1 January 2009, the same day that the euro officially became the country’s new currency. There was a dual circulation period until 16 January 2009 during which payments could be made in Slovak koruna or euro.
