- Definition stringent process of physically separating certified materials from non-certified materials and of tracking materials in general throughout the entire supply chain Reference COM-Terminology Coordination, based on: European Commission. DG ENV. Correspondence dated 24.3.2023
- Comment In practice it helps businesses to track their materials and finished goods and understand exactly what goes into their product so they can make accurate sustainability claims. In a mass balance method scheme, certified materials are not physically separated and may be mixed with non-certified materials in the processing and manufacturing stage. This means that brands aren’t able to make specific claims about the certified material content of their products. Instead, they’re able to make vague claims such as “We use X% of recycled materials” because this is how much of that certified material was input at the start of the processing stage. In segregation or controlled blending you know the exact % inside each product, i.e. materials are physically segregated in production processes throughout the supply chain (“physical segregation”). Another possibility is to mix the materials in production but separate them in bookkeeping (“mass balance approach”).
