Il s’agit, entre autres, de plateformes à base de protéines (particules pseudovirales), de plateformes de vaccins à ADN, de plateformes à base d’ARNm, de vaccins à réplicons (ARN autoreproducteur) et de vaccins à vecteurs viraux et bactériens.2. Il faut savoir qu’il est possible, bien que complexe, de créer un virus chimère à visée vaccinale en laboratoire. Cette technique consiste à insérer à un endroit choisi du génome d’un premier virus (virus A) la séquence génétique codant pour l’antigène d’un autre virus (virus B) contre lequel on veut fabriquer un vaccin. Le virus A, appelé « plateforme vaccinale », est en général un virus vivant « atténué » (son pouvoir pathogène lui a été retiré) déjà utilisé comme base de vaccin. En combinant les deux, on obtient ainsi un virus chimère qui, une fois inoculé, permet à la plateforme vaccinale de « présenter » l’antigène du virus B au système immunitaire. Ce dernier le gardera en mémoire et sera capable de le reconnaître immédiatement si le virus B venait à infecter l’individu par la suite.
