Nóta Gums are usually formed as unwanted side products of hydrocarbons' reactions (processing), and preferably get separated from products in distillation columns (so-called bottom fractions or bottom cuts). However, often they deposit on catalyst or reactor and piping walls (due to lower local temperatures) and cause equipment fouling. This fouling (deposits) has to be removed by either mechanical cleaning (maintenance works) or dissolving (preferably in heated feed and later removed from it in the distillation column) or are combusted during decoking (together with coke - actually gums and tars are usually precursors for coke formation).Reference: European Commission.
