- Nóta "A lockout effectively denies the opportunity to earn and puts pressure on trade unions to settle disputes, as their members become dependent on strike pay or have to use their savings. Lockouts are rare events in the UK and in some countries they are unlawful. In Germany, however, they are an established feature of industrial relations and are used by employers in response to selective or pin-point strikes. In this context, they serve to escalate industrial action and pressure the unions towards settlement.Note ref.: ""lockout"" A Dictionary of Human Resource Management. Edmund Heery and Mike Noon.
