    Nóta Fire refining is achieved by first blowing air through the molten metal to oxidise impurities and to remove final traces of sulphur (oxidation stage). A small amount of slag is produced at this stage that needs to be removed prior to the next stage. In the next stage (reduction or 'poling'), a source of reducing agent, such as natural gas or propane, is then added to partially remove the oxygen that is dissolved in the liquid copper. Ammonia may also be used as a reducing agent, but has been reported to increase NOX levels.
