    en
Definition hard aluminium and silicon oxide particles added to the crude oil in refineries relying on catalytic cracking, to enhance low temperature fuel cracking Reference "The Motorship > Home > News > Fuels and oils > On-line measurement of catalytic fines in HFO systems http://www.motorship.com/news101/fuels-and-oils/on-line-measurement-of-catalytic-fines-in-hfo-systems [14.9.2015]"
Comment They are recovered from the process and recycled. The recycling, however, is not 100% effective and a certain level of catalytic fines will always be present in the output product of a fluid catalytic cracker. This product is often referred to as heavy cycle oil (HCO) or slurry oil.

    catalyst layer
    en
Definition "anode or cathode layer that is added on both sides of the membrane in PEM fuel cells" Reference "Department of Energy > The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy > Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Technologies Office > Fuel Cells > Parts of a Fuel Cell (9.4.2024)"
Comment Conventional catalyst layers include nanometer-sized particles of platinum dispersed on a high-surface-area carbon support. This supported platinum catalyst is mixed with an ion-conducting polymer (ionomer) and sandwiched between the membrane and the GDLs. On the anode side, the platinum catalyst enables hydrogen molecules to be split into protons and electrons. On the cathode side, the platinum catalyst enables oxygen reduction by reacting with the protons generated by the anode, producing water. The ionomer mixed into the catalyst layers allows the protons to travel through these layers.
