    Definition Mit dem 1982 in Kraft getretenen Londoner Schiffsvermessungs-Übereinkommen von 1969 wurde statt der Bruttoregistertonne die Bruttoraumzahl (BRZ) (E = "gross tonnage" oder "gross tons") eingeführt. Diese wurde für die Fischereifahrzeuge der Gemeinschaft mit VO 2930/86 verbindlich. Vor dem Inkrafttreten dieser VO in Dienst gestellte Schiffe mussten bis zum 18.7.94 in BRZ nachvermessen werden. Schiffe von 15 bis 24 Metern müssen gemäß Änderungs-VO 3294/94 bis 1.1.2004 nachvermessen werden. Es gibt also z.Zt. immer noch Schiffe, die nicht in BRZ vermessen sind. Bei vor 94 in Dienst gestellten Schiffen wird neben der BRZ auch die alte BRT angegeben (s. z.B. Anhang III der VO 2090/98 über die Fischereifahrzeugkartei der Gemeinschaft. Außerdem wird in einigen Fischereiorganisationen (z.B. der ICCAT) noch von Registertonnen gesprochen. Das Problem dabei ist, dass neue Schiffe gar nicht in Registertonnen vermessen sind. VORSICHT BEIM GEBRAUCH VON BRZ MIT EINER ZAHL! Beispiel: "ships of 4000 gross tonnage" wird mit "Schiffe MIT EINER BRUTTORAUMZAHL VON 4000" wiedergegeben (und nicht - wie fälschlicherweise in EU-Rechtsakten - mit "mit 4000 Bruttoraumzahl").
